Preview: Davy X Jones

Davy X Jones is a first-person action game set in a nautical afterlife called the Locker. You play like Davy Jones, a beheaded pirate whose floating skull guides you with sarcastic commentaries and philosophical reflections. This duality between body and head creates an original narrative structure and a constant flow of humor, reminiscent of the absurd flair of Monkey Island and the dark tone of Shadows of the Damned.

The visual style is one of the strongest features of the game. The world is a mix of gothic horror, nautical folklore and psychedelic elements. Think of rotting shipwrecks floating in purple fog, skeletons with seaweed beards, and levels that feel like a cross between a ghost ship and a baroque theatre. The art direction is bold and consistent, and despite the technical limitations it creates a memorable atmosphere.

Yet the technical finish leaves to be desired. The enemies are generic and lack character, which is unfortunate considering the creative setting. The combat is functional but shallow: You have a handful of guns, including a harpoon gun and a cursed gun, but shooting misses impact and variation. Enemies barely respond to hits and fights quickly repeat. The platform elements are also variable: The control feels rigid and the camera does not always cooperate, leading to frustrating moments.

The story has potential. Davy’His rivalry with Blackbeard, his quest for salvation and the mysterious powers that control the Locker, give the whole a mythological underlay. The game plays with theme’s as guilt, identity and betrayal, but often get stuck in superficial dialogues and loose scenesènes. The humor is sharp and self-conscious, but not for everyone: those who do not like cynical one-liners and absurd situations will have difficulty with the tone.

Davy X Jones is still limited in content. The game contains some chapters that each have their own visual style and end boss, but the variation in gameplay is minimal. There are hints of future expansions, such as new weapons, multiplayer options and more narrative depth, but right now it feels like a charming but unfinished product. The game is available in Early Access, which provides some context for the shortcomings, but also creates expectations for improvement.
