Review: Avatar Fire And Ash "contains spoilers"

Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story almost immediately after The Way of Water and takes the viewer back to the breathtaking Pandora. The film opens remarkably: James Cameron directs himself to the public in a short introduction and emphasises that no AI has been used in production, showing motionâ€...capture images to underline craftsmanship. It sets the tone for a film that once again relies heavily on technical perfection and world building.

Visually, Fire and Ash is another masterpiece. The landscapes, creatures and action are of a level that hardly any other blockbuster can approach. Critics call the movie “breathtaking” and “a”. The action is also praised: powerful, dynamic and typical Cameron grand, clear and impressive choreographed.

Yet not everything is rosy. Many critics note that despite its splendor, the film is getting more and more repeated. The story feels familiar, predictable and sometimes even exhaustingly long, with a playing time of over three hours. Some critics even go so far as to say that the franchise is beginning to lose its magic and that the film “numbly bore” can be despite the visual splendor. Also thematically Cameron continues to hang in old patterns and stereotypes, which reduces the impact of the message.

Fire and Ash is a film that shines in form, but struggles with content. For fans of Pandora and Cameron's visual vision it is a feast. For viewers hoping for an innovative story or tighter pace, it may be disappointing.
