Review: Halo: Campaign Evolved

Halo: Combat Evolved changed forever in 2001 how first-person shooters were played on consoles. With Halo: Campaign Evolved returns Master Chief to the mysterious ring world where his story began. It is not a simple remaster, but a completely rebuilt version of the original campaign, with modern graphics, custom control, new gameplay mechanics, co-op and additional missions.

The story largely follows the same events as the original. After an attack by the alien Covenant, the spaceship Pillar of Autumn must make an emergency landing on a giant artificial ring world. As Master Chief, you explore this unknown environment together with the artificial intelligence of Cortana.

What begins as a battle against the Covenant slowly turns into a greater and more dangerous conflict. The ring turns out to be not only an impressive structure, but also a destructive weapon with a dark secret. Although the story today feels simpler than that of many modern action games, the mysterious structure still works excellently. The renewed intermediate films also give important events more emotional and cinematographic impact.

The basis of the gameplay is still strong after all these years. The combination of shooting, throwing grenades, carrying out melee attacks and driving vehicles remains the heart of the experience. Because you can only bring a limited number of weapons, you have to make regular choices during battles. For example, a plasma gun works well against energy shields, while human weapons are more effective against enemies without protection.

The enemies react differently to the player. Grunts may panic when their leader is eliminated, Elites seek cover and Jackals use energy shields to protect themselves. This makes many fights feel dynamic and unpredictable.

The remake adds several modern mechanisms. Master Chief can move faster and use weapons and capabilities from later Halo games. This makes the campaign more flexible and accessible than the original. For new players these adjustments are pleasant, but experienced fans will notice that this changes the original pace. Some environments feel smaller because you move through them faster.

Vehicles also play an important role again. With the Warthog, Ghost, Banshee and Scorpion among others, you can approach large battle areas in different ways. The control system has improved in many respects, although not all vehicles feel equally accurate.

In addition to the original arsenal, the remake contains weapons and enemies from later Halo games. This allows for more variety and allows returning players to tackle known battles in a different way. The new weapons usually fit well within the campaign, but can sometimes disrupt the original balance. Certain confrontations become easier when you gain early access to more powerful weapons.

The extra enemies create more variety. Especially more aggressive opponents force the player to constantly move and to quickly prioritize. The artificial intelligence remains a strong part of the game. Opponents seek cover, dodge grenades and try to surround the player. Not every reaction looks as modern, but the fights remain entertaining.

Visualize Halo: Campaign Evolved a lot of impression. The renewed environments, character models, lighting and effects clearly show that the game is completely rebuilt. Close forests, snowy valleys, alien complexes and large battlefields contain much more detail than before.

The enemies, weapons and vehicles have also been redesigned. Elites look bigger and more threatening, while Master Chief's armor contains many small details. Explosions, plasma shots and energy shields create a spectacular spectacle during large confrontations.

However, the extra graphic details are not always an improvement. The original used simple colours and clear silhouettes, making enemies and important objects immediately recognizable. In the remake, the image can become busier and less clear during chaotic battles. Some environments have also been made more realistic, thus losing some of the strange and mysterious atmosphere of the original.

Although different levels have been adapted, the strengths and weaknesses of the original design are still visible. Known missions with large open areas are still among the highlights. They offer the freedom to attack enemy positions in different ways and to use vehicles strategically.

Other parts contain many similar corridors, re-used spaces and recurring combat situations. Especially during the second half of the campaign, locations are regularly re-used. The renewed graphics and more extensive enemy groups make this less disturbing, but do not solve the problem completely.

Clearer route markings make it easier for players to get lost. This makes the game more accessible, but also takes something away from the feeling that you are exploring an unknown installation yourself.

Co-op opportunities are an important part of the experience. The campaign can be played together with other players, making fights bigger, more chaotic and often funnier. Players can use different weapons, man vehicles together and tackle stronger enemies as a team.

However, the original campaign was not designed for a large group of players. This will make certain confrontations considerably easier. For a first and more serious play, keep playing solo or play with ééanother player probably the best choice.

Additional modifications and collectable Skulls increase replayability. It can adapt enemies, weapons and conditions. This results in unexpected combinations and gives experienced players a reason to go through well-known missions again. Especially players who like to experiment or try higher levels of difficulty can enjoy this.

The biggest downside is the lack of traditional competitive multiplayer. Halo was not only huge because of his campaign, but also because of the local and online multiplayer. Iconian maps, vehicles and game modes were an important part of the series for years.

Halo: Campaign Evolved focuses mainly on the campaign and co-op. This makes the package less complete than expected. Players who expect competitive multiplayer or separate survival mode after the story will not find them here.

This is particularly striking because other Halo collections offer more campaigns and multiplayer parts. Anyone looking for a modern implementation of the first campaign will receive a carefully made product. Whoever expects a full celebration of the Halo series can find the offer on the lean side.

The music remains one of the strongest parts. The well-known choirs, orchestral compositions and electronic sounds enhance the sense of discovery, danger and heroism. The reworked music sounds fuller, while the recognizable character is largely preserved.

The sound effects of weapons, vehicles and enemies have also been renewed. Most effects sound more powerful and detailed. Yet some weapons lack some of their original recognizability because the sounds are made more realistic and heavier.

The more modern control and additional settings make the game accessible to a wide audience. New players can play the campaign at a lower level of difficulty, while experienced players can raise the challenge or trigger modifications. The clear interface and route indications help beginners to understand more quickly what is expected of them.

Advantages: impressively renewed graphics, strong and tactical firefights, modern and responsive control, varied weapons arsenal, smart enemies, fun vehicles, extensive co-op capabilities, recognizable music, extra missions, good replayability and an accessible introduction to the beginning of the Halo series.

Negatives: no competitive multiplayer, a relatively limited overall package, some repetitive levels, many re-used environments, modern mechanisms change the original pace, some fights are less clear, not all vehicles drive equally pleasant and some artistic changes will appeal less to nostalgic fans.

Halo: Campaign Evolved shows that Master Chief's first trip is still special. The combination of tactical gunfights, intelligent enemies, vehicles and a mysterious science fiction world remains outstanding. The renewed images, modern control, additional weapons and co-op capabilities make the campaign more accessible and spectacular.

Yet it is not the final Halo experience. Some modern adjustments change the original rhythm, while the more detailed presentation sometimes at the expense of readability and atmosphere. Also, some repetitive levels remain a weakness.

The lack of competitive multiplayer is the biggest missed opportunity. For a remake of so’n important Halo-game feels a package built mainly around the campaign somewhat limited. Nevertheless, it is a strong return to the beginning of the series. New players get an accessible way to discover an important piece of game history, while fans get an impressive and recognizable reinterpretation.

Verdict

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a visually impressive and excellent playable remake of a legendary campaign. Modern improvements, new missions and extensive co-op make the return worthwhile, but due to the lack of competitive multiplayer and some technical and artistic shortcomings, the ultimate Halo remake remains just out of reach.
