Review: Macabre
Macabre is a game that from the start makes clear what it stands for. It's about working together, surviving together and feeling fear together. Everything in the game is designed with co†The game works best if you play it with others. Only play can, but then it feels empty. The silence that is oppressive in co†The world feels different. Enemies seem harder, puzzles are harder and the tension disappears. It is clear that this is a co-op game and that is at the same time his strength and his weakness.
What Macabre does really well is the story. It's mysterious, slowly built up and convincing. Many horror games focus on scare moments, but Macabre does that differently. You're discovering, piece by piece, what happened. Conversations, little clues and the surroundings tell a story. Not everything is explained and that makes it exciting. The story gets under your skin. The fear comes not from what you see, but from what you think can happen.
The moments with other players are best. EéOne person points a flashlight, someone else hears something moving and calls it. Suddenly you're all quiet. That shared tension is special. Only it doesn't play so well. Puzzles that make sense in co†Enemies sometimes feel unfair or predictable. The game has been made clear to play together.
The gameplay itself is a mix of exploration, puzzles and survival. You walk through dark corridors and explore everything to find clues. The control works fine, although some animations are a bit stiff. Enemies are smart enough to keep you alert, but you know patterns quickly. The good thing is that sound and atmosphere constantly create tensionëRun. Sounds, shadows and silences all feel just right.
Visually the game looks good, even though it is not a graphic blockbuster. Light and shadow are cleverly used. Dark corners feel really dangerous. Small details make the world credible. The sound is excellent. From soft footsteps to a creaking floor, everything feels carefully designed. The soundtrack is minimal, which makes silence exciting. Voice actors sound convincing and match the tone of the game.
Technically, Macabre is solid. Sometimes there are small bumps at busy scèNes, but nothing serious. Menu’S are clear, but a bit old-fashioned. Matchmaking works well with friends, but slowly with strangers. The game would have benefited from some more options for personalization, such as audio balance or adjustment of difficulty.
What I respect is that the developers didn't try to satisfy everyone. This is a co-op game and that's it. They have not added AI partners for solo players. That's brave, but it means that some players stay out of play.
Macabre has two faces. It is intense, exciting and compelling. In singleplayer it is slow and frustrating. Playing together takes it to a higher level. Without teammates, it feels empty.
Yet you see the ambition of the developers. The atmosphere is strong, the story is interesting and the tension can be felt. The game shows that horror is not just about scare moments, but about cooperation and shared fear. That makes it unique.
Some moments stay with you. The light on wet floors, the silence after a chase, an almost missed rescue of a fellow player. That's the scèYou don't forget. Macabre knows how to dose tension.
It remains a game with potential that is not fully exploited. A smoother single player, better balance and some technical finishing could have made the score higher. Now it scores well with the right players, especially those who love co-op.
Macabre is a game that chooses its own path. He's not an all-man friend, but he doesn't have to. It is exciting and unique in coâ€. The world, the sound and the story work together to keep you involved. You can only play, but it doesn't feel right. This is a game that only really comes to life when you share it.

Verdict
Macabre is a cooperative horror experience that fully unfolds its power when playing with friends. The excitement, teamwork and mysterious atmosphere make it a unique game within the genre. The story is well written and slowly built, making you truly involved in the world and events. However, playing Solo is disappointing: The game then misses the dynamic that makes co-op so exciting. Technically, the game is solid, but not completely polished, and the content is limited by the Early Access stage. For fans of co-op horror, Macabre is definitely worth it, but solo players will probably get frustrated.
