Review: Nascar 25

NASCAR 25 is an ambitious and realistic racing game that revitalises the franchise, but not without shortcomings.

The game was developed by iRacing Studios, known for their highly authentic simulations. For the first time, they take over the NASCAR license of 704 Games, and you will notice that immediately. NASCAR 25 offers all four major NASCAR series: the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, Craftsman Truck Series and for the first time also the ARCA Menards Series. This provides a wide range of competitions and vehicles, allowing fans of the sport to fully soak up.

Graphically, a clear step forward has been taken. Thanks to the Unreal Engine, circuits look detailed, with laser-scanned orbits and realistic atmosphere. The sound of motorbikes and audiences contributes to the experience, making you feel really in the middle of a race. The game plays smoothly with a controller, but comes to its right best with a racing handlebar and rig.

In terms of gameplay NASCAR 25 offers an extensive carrièremode in which you are accompanied by Dale Earnhardt Jr. You build reputation, close sponsor deals and work your way up through the different series. There are also fast races, championships and a solid online multiplayer. The feeling of pack racing at high speed is well transferred and gives a unique tension that you find in few other racing games.

Yet there are also disadvantages. On consoles like the Xbox Series X there are reports of varying frames and superficial presentation. For players not familiar with NASCAR, the repetitive character of oval racing may be less attractive. The game explicitly targets fans of the sport and will be less convincing outside that target group.

The reviews are mixed but mostly positive. IGN and Athlon Sports praise authenticity and depth, while Metacritic scores are around 70-77, suggesting a solid but not perfect experience. For real NASCAR lovers this is the best game in years, but for casual racers the offer may feel a little limited.

In summary, NASCAR 25 is a successful comeback of the franchise. It combines realism, extensive content and a strong careerèremodus, but still has technical difficulties and a niche appeal. NASCAR fans will enjoy it a lot, while others will especially appreciate the quality of the simulation, provided they can agree with the unique character of oval racing.

Verdict

NASCAR 25 marks an important step for the franchise and shows that iRacing Studios is the right party to revive the license. The game manages to convey the excitement and authenticity of NASCAR, with a strong career mode and a wide range of series. Yet technical flaws and repetitive character of oval racing make the experience not equally attractive to everyone. For fans of the sport this is without doubt the most complete and compelling NASCARâ€S game in years, while casual players will especially appreciate the quality of the simulation, provided they can find themselves in the unique style of racing.
