The gameplay of Ghost of Yotei builds on the solid foundations of Tsushima, but adds an impressive layer of depth, variation and tactics. Atsu has an arsenal of five main weapons including classic katana, heavy odachi, flexible kusarigama, a ceremoniële spear and a surprisingly effective musket. Each weapon has its own fighting style, combo’s and strategic applications, making fights never feel repetitive.

The open world of Ezo is a visual and thematic masterpiece. From snowy mountain passes and misty forests to deserted temples and war-torn villages each region has its own ecology, folklore and challenges. The world is full of side missions, spiritual rituals, hot springs, lost artifacts and stories of local residents. The mission structure is more fluid than in Tsushima: You are no longer restricted by fixed order, but can freely switch between exploration, story and personal development.

A special element is the karma system: choices you make such as saving or killing enemies, helping villagers or destroying sacred places.ïAtsu’s mental state and the reactions of the world around her. This adds a moral dimension to the gameplay that goes beyond good versus evil.

Although the central revenge story feels familiar, know Ghost of Yotei to transcend the genre by Atsu’s personal journey to interwoven with theme’s as grief, identity, spirituality and colonization. The game is soaked with Japanese mythology and folklore, and uses flashbacks, visions and dialogues to Atsu’to make inner struggle tangible.
