Review: Void Crew
Void Crew, developed by Hutlihut Games and published by Focus Entertainment, Void Crew is a coöPerative space game that challenges players to run a ship together, defeat enemies and defy the unknown. Now that the game has reached its 1.0 version and is available on console with full cross-play, it's time to assess whether this intergalactic experience is worthwhile.
Premise and gameplay
In Void Crew you play like a ‘Ectype’ on behalf of the mysterious Metem Group. Your mission? Beating The Hollow and finding the mythical Garden. The game is run-based and has strong roguelite elements: every mission is a ‘pilgrimage’ where your ship and character gradually become stronger.
You choose from four classes: Pilot, Engineer, Gunner and Scavenger. Although every role offers unique benefits, multitasking is essential. The gameplay is about collaboration: from charging the void drive to repairing systems and performing EVA missions outside the ship. It's chaotic, funny and sometimes frustrating – Especially if your crew doesn't communicate properly.
Co-op Experience
Void Crew shines when you play with a dedicated group of friends. The intensity of fighting, managing subsystems and improvising during emergencies provide memorable moments. Solo playing is technically possible, but lacks the magic of teamwork.
The structure reminiscent of FTL and Sea of Thieves: You choose missions via a 3D map, jump from sector to sector and try to keep your ship intact. The variation in missions from convoy attacks to the destruction of enemy shipyards keeps it fresh.
Technique and presentation
Graphical Void Crew is solid, with a functional but not groundbreaking style. The interface and HUD are clear, although performance can sometimes fail when using in-game computers. The steering of the ship feels slow and misses the freedom you would expect from a space game, which undermined the immersion.
The Scavenger class is the least convincing: Although the idea of exteriors sounds exciting, the execution is limited and feels the role is unnecessary next to the Engineer.

Verdict
Void Crew is a unique co-op experience that revolves around chaos, communication and camaraderie. The game offers a solid basis for exciting multiplayer adventures, especially with friends. The roguelite structure works well, and the variation in missions keeps it interesting. However, there are technical shortcomings and design choices such as the weak Scavenger role and slow control that dampen the experience.
For fans of co-op games such as Sea of Thieves or FTL, Void Crew is highly recommended, provided you have a crew that will engage you in the adventure.
