Neosis Echoes reveals first gameplay: alien survival game lets emotions change the world
The independent French studio Vectaris Interactive has the first officialëLe gameplay trailer by Neosis Echoes revealed. This ambitious open world survival game introduces a striking system in which the player's emotions directly affect the environment, enemies, resources and battles. The game is developed by a team of only three people and is currently in the pre-alpha phase.
Survival games are usually about collecting raw materials, building accommodations and surviving in a dangerous environment. Neosis Echoes wants to add an extra dimension. Instead of just taking into account hunger, equipment and enemies, players must also learn to deal with the emotional state of their character.
The French developer Vectaris Interactive calls this concept Reactive Survival. The system ensures that the alien planet on which the adventure takes place constantly responds to the main character's feelings. For example, a positive mood can provide more quiet animals and more favourable conditions, while negative emotions can create more dangerous situations and new opportunities.ëRun.
With the first officialëLe gameplay trailer now gives the studio a more extensive look at this special game mechanism and the world in which the adventure takes place.
A mysterious planet full of forgotten technology
In Neosis Echoes players crawl into the skin of Evan Draxell, a synthetic clone of the founder of the powerful mega company Draxell Corp. After a space voyage of 200 years, Evan awakens to the mysterious planet of Varos. He has no memories of his past and must discover who he is, why he has landed on this planet and what role he plays in the events that are taking place there.
Varos is no ordinary alien world. The planet has been shaped by centuries-old technology and is beingïInfluenced by powerful artificial intelligences. Between the ruïThere are dangerous creatures, mysterious constructions and valuable raw materials.
An important role is for Echorium, a precious raw material extracted by people with cybernetic implants. At the same time, the presence of Monolith, a powerful superintelligence, hangs like a shadow over the planet.
Monolith seems to consider human emotions a threat. This becomes clear in the closing message of the gameplay trailer: "Emotion is an anomaly. Your stability will be correct."
This makes the emotional system not only an important part of the gameplay, but also a central part of the story.
Emotions determine how the world reacts
The most striking part of Neosis Echoes is the so-called Emotional LoopSystem. Evan's feelings are constantly connected to the world around him.
Events during exploration, building and fightingïInfluences are emotional. These emotions then lead to changes in the environment and the available gameplay options. The actions of the player can then again influence his feelings, creating a continuous interaction.
According to Vectaris Interactive, this system consists of three main components: emotional state, stress and focus.
The emotional state determines among other things which skills are available and how the environment reacts. Stress is built up during dangerous situations, fighting and other harsh conditions. Focus is a raw material that players use for special actions and skills, especially during battles.
It is striking that the developers do not automatically consider positive emotions to be better than negative emotions. Both situations offer their own advantages and disadvantages.
When Evan feels positive, certain animals can react more calmly and more favourable conditions arise to explore the environment. A negative emotional state can make the world more hostile, but at the same time give access to stronger skills and special raw materials.
Players must therefore constantly consider the emotional state best suited to their next challenge.
Even the weather and plants react to feelings
The influence of emotions is not limited to the skills of Evan. According to the developers, almost the entire game world responds to his mental state.
So the weather can change when the emotions of the character change. The vegetation also reacts to its feelings, allowing plants to behave differently under certain conditions.
In addition, enemies and alien animals can adapt their behavior. An area that is relatively safe during a positive emotional state can become significantly more dangerous under other circumstances.
The collection of materials is alsoïIt's flowing through the system. According to the studio some raw materials are only available if specific emotional conditions are met.
In the gameplay trailer you can see among other things how lightning around Evan appears when he is in a negative emotional state.
The trailer additionally introduces Dysforix, an item that allows players to consciously put themselves in a negative mood for five minutes. This makes it possible to target certain benefits of negative emotions.
The system should thus encourage players to not only control emotions, but also to use them strategically during survival.
First gameplay trailer shows fights, raw materials and basic construction
In addition to the emotional system, the approximately two minute gameplay trailer shows various traditional survival mechanisms.
Players travel through vast, reddish desert landscapes full of alien plants, impressive rock formations and remains of ancient civilizations. In different locations are giant stone faces and mysterious ruïng visible.
While exploring, Evan faces various enemies. The trailer shows fights against humanoïThe robots, aliens and a huge prickly monster that looks like a plant.
The collection of raw materials is also discussed extensively. Players can scan and delve materials and then create new objects and constructions. The message "Scan. Extract. Build to survive." stresses the importance of these survival mechanisms.
There are also images of building a private base, exploring enclosed spaces and visiting a settlement with traders and a market.
With this Neosis Echoes seems to combine several known elements from the survival genre with his own emotional system.
An ambitious project of only three developers
What makes Neosis Echoes extra striking is the size of the development team. Behind the game is Vectaris Interactive, an independent studio from the French Strasbourg which consists of only three people.
Despite the limited team size, the studio is working on an open world game with several coherent systems, including fighting, basic construction, resource management, artificial intelligence and a dynamic environment.
The first gameplay images show various landscapes, alien architecture and different types of enemies. The changing weather conditions and visual effects of the emotional system also receive attention.
However, Neosis Echoes is still in an early development phase. The images shown come from a pre-alpha version, which can also change animations, user interface and other parts.
The extent to which the game world eventually becomes extensive and how deep the different systems interact will have to become clear during further development.
Neosis Echoes does not have a release date yet
Vectaris Interactive does not yet have an officialële release date for Neosis Echoes announced. The game is still in its pre-alpha phase and the developers have given an impression with the first gameplay trailer of the direction the project takes.
The main distinguishing element remains the Reactive Survival system. Where many survival games allow the environment to respond to the player's actions, Neosis Echoes also wants to direct the emotional state of the main character.
This should ensure that players not only take into account their equipment, resources and enemies, but also the impact of their feelings on the world.
Whether this ambitious concept will ultimately function as comprehensive as the developers have in mind, remains to be seen. The first gameplay trailer makes it clear that Vectaris Interactive with Neosis Echoes wants to take its own direction within the survival genre.
Neosis Echoes is currently developing. An officialëLe release date has not yet been announced.
