Thousands of Android phones hacked by new malware

Thousands of Android users have recently become victims of new malware that spreads via SMS messages. Victims receive a message requesting to download an app via a link that initially seems to lead to the Google Play Store.

In reality, it is a fake environment that is intended to install malicious software on the phone. Once the app is downloaded, cybercriminals can watch remotely with the victim's screen. They can also intercept sensitive data, change PIN codes and modify or steal personal information.

Cybersecurity experts warn Android users never to just click on links in SMS messages, even if these seem reliable. Always check if an app comes from the officialële Google Play Store and be extra alert to unexpected download requests.

Anyone who suspects being victimized makes sense to disconnect the phone directly from the Internet and contact the bank and a security expert.
